History of LifeCare Medical Center

In less than 100 years, healthcare in northern Minnesota has grown from a small pioneer doctor’s office to a state-of-the-art health care campus offering care to the people of Roseau County and the surrounding area.

Hospital care in Roseau started with the efforts of pioneer nurse Marie Budd. Mrs. Budd had just graduated from medical training when she and her husband arrived in Roseau in 1911. She soon accompanied Dr. J. L. Delmore by horse and buggy into the countryside to assist him with surgery in farmhouse kitchens. Seeing the need for better conditions, the Budds established a two-bed facility in the old abandoned courthouse in 1915. It became Roseau’s first hospital.

In the following decades, the needs of a growing population brought new and exciting improvements to healthcare in Roseau County. The campus became known as Roseau Area Hospital & Homes following the addition of a nursing home, ambulance service, home care, and an array of high tech hospital services.

October 1, 2007 marked the dawn of a new era in rural healthcare when the corporate name was changed to LifeCare Medical Center. This decision, initiated and carried out by our Board of Directors, brought the hospital and its entire healthcare system under one name. It also fulfilled the Board’s request to better embrace the communities we serve. Community input and marketing research supported the Board’s vision and today our services include: Home Care, Hospice, Public Health, Rehabilitation Services, and both nursing homes display the LifeCare name.

In addition to representing the caring staff and the population it serves, LifeCare Medical Center gives our entire service area a feeling of ownership in our health care organization.

Today, LifeCare Medical Center includes a newly expanded campus with high tech equipment and well-trained doctors and staff. We also offer our patients extended healthcare options through our link to Altru Health System. We take pride in our medical heritage, and invite you to join us as we continue our commitment of caring for generations.
