Endoscopy is primarily a diagnostic procedure which uses a flexible scope for visualization of the colon or upper gastrointestinal tract. These practices which include gastroscopy, and colonoscopy are performed either on an inpatient or outpatient basis in a special procedure room.
Endoscopy hours of operation are Monday through Friday, though coverage is available for emergency procedures.
Endoscopy is performed by a specially trained physician with the assistance of a licensed practical nurse. Intravenous conscious sedation is administrated by the physician with the addition of an ACLS (Advances Cardiac Life Support) certified registered nurse who monitors the patient throughout the procedure.
